A Magnificent Party!

The last time I sang "Happy Birthday," I was 7 years old and it meant nothing to me. This past weekend, I sang it--along with about 40 others--to a man who recently turned 85. We had meat and cake. We had the spirit of many years in the room with us. We had the best damn poet in the world making us all feel that the decisions we made to follow poetry all those decades ago were the correct ones. Thank you, Philip Levine, for all of it. Here's looking forward to the 95th...the 105th...the....

It will be published in early 2013 by Prairie Lights Books, an imprint of the University of Iowa Press! What a joy to have this great man as my friend; to continue to listen and learn from a modern day master.

Several months back, the poet, Millicent Accardi, asked if I would agree to answer some questions about myself and my writing for a piece she was doing for the Portuguese-American Review. I was happy to comply with the request. This is the piece, just up, and I hope you enjoy it.

Heading to Fresno this afternoon to see my old teacher and friend of over 40 years, Poet Laureate Philip Levine, read. It should be a fabulous time, with one of the great poets America has ever delivered, as well as one of the most splendid readers and story tellers ever to grace a stage!

did a "Poetic License" spot for the terrific show, Words on a Wire, from KTEP in El Paso, Texas yesterday. I am about 23 minutes into it, but listen to the entire half hour. Very nice! Thanks again to Daniel Chacon, Benjamin Alire Saenz, and the staff of KTEP.
